On the 19th and 20th January 2019, Cú Chulainn sent an under 13 team to the Corrib Development Tournament. The 10 strong team, with 6 representatives of St Malachy’s College, Belfast; traveled to Galway with high hopes of a good time and winning a few games along the way.
Things went well, very well indeed.
In the group stages the team saw off North Dublin with a 14-3 win followed by a 3-2 win over Watford who won the tournament last year. Next up came a quarter final against Drogheda, who fell to 13-2 defeat.
After a night of rest it was back to the pool on Sunday for a semi-final against Tribes. This was a hard fought game with Cú Chulainn coming through to win 6-4 to face Corrib in the final.
The final was a tight affair with the teams sitting at 4-4 going into the final quarter. At that point tiredness kicked in and Corrib pulled away to an 8-4 win.
All at Cú Chulainn would like to congratulate Corrib on the victory and hosting a fantastic event.
As for our Under 13 team, as Assistant Coach Michael McKendry said ‘This was the first competition for many of the players, and first trip away from home, the experience will stand them in good stead. We all think they did the club and their families proud.’
Next up for the Under 13s is a series of games in Ulster culminating in the Irish U-13 Cup in April.
